BIO

M. David Melvin is an Asian-American director of mixed-race descent (AKA Hapa or Wasian). He’s half Chinese and half a pupu platter of English, Dutch-Jewish, Cherokee, Blackfoot, French, Irish, and Polynesian. But most people in LA think he’s Mexican. Growing up in a large Chinese immigrant family and spending much of his childhood in religious hippie communes around the world have given him a unique take on culture, religion, and psychology. He likes to explore all three with jokes and occasional empathy.

Melvin’s endless pursuit of both the perfect shot and Kubrick’s “Non-Submersible Unit” has been a lifelong quest. He’s spent his career writing, producing, and directing for major studios, including Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount, and Disney. Some of his favorite jobs include writing for Greg Berlanti, directing for Ridley Scott, making an award-winning Super Bowl commercial, and directing the theatrically released Hamilton reunion documentary.
